Waterpark RFC vs. Kanturk RFC – 25th November 2018

Final Score 37 – 10

The Kanturk 1st XV were back in action on Sunday afternoon in Waterford City to take on Waterpark in the Munster Junior League. The North Cork side made the journey down to the Deise following an impressive bonus point win the previous week away to St. Mary’s RFC.

The opening minutes of the game saw the home side take a 6-0 lead following some ill-discipline from Kanturk. The pressure continued to build as the Waterpark team retained most of the possession for the opening 20 minutes which resulted in a try. From this point on, the traveling side settled into the game by retaining position and testing the Waterpark defence with some impressive counter-attacking from Eoin O’ Sullivan, Kieran Sexton and Michael Bradley. Following some excellent scrums and lineouts, the Kanturk pack provided the backline with a great platform and some quick hands saw Michael Bradley race down the pitch in open space. Finally taken down within the Waterpark 22, the Kanturk side kept the momentum up through quick play from brothers and half backs Sean and Ronan O’Brien. With Waterpark now on the back foot, Kanturk secured their opening score of the game with a try for Conor O’ Sullivan. This was the catalyst that Kanturk needed and the rest of the first half played out with the Cork side keeping the pressure on with strong runs from Ciaran Boyce, Bernie Daly and Brendan Kelleher. Unfortunately for the away side, halftime came without any more scores however the second half began in similar fashion to how the first half ended, with Kanturk imposing themselves on the game and playing effective rugby within the Waterpark half. The sustained Kanturk attack saw Jack Bradley make a charge through a disjointed defence and touched down over the Waterpark line taking two tacklers with him. Unfortunately, the referee deemed that Bradley lost control of the ball while touching down and so the Kanturk had to get on with the decision and look for their second score with a penalty. Another five-minute period of Kanturk attacking within the Waterpark 22 saw the home team hold out and respond with a turnover try which proved to be a decisive blow in the course of the match. Waterpark would go on to score additional tries and though Kanturk replied with a second try from Navarone Papali’I, the home side proved too good on the day.

The Kanturk team now look to bounce back and retain their unbeaten home run as they face off against Kilfeakle RFC this Sunday 2nd December. The curtain raiser for the day sees the 2nd XV play in a friendly at 12pm against Mallow RFC. All support is greatly appreciated by both teams.
